SIR CHARLES WOOD (1866-1926) was born in Armagh, Ireland. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London 1883-87, then taught harmony there from 1888, later becoming a Professor. Also from 1888 he conducted the Cambridge University Musical Society and became organ scholar at Gonville & Caius College the following year, holding both these posts until 1894. He was a lecturer in harmony and counterpoint at Cambridge University 1897-1924, and succeeded Stanford as Professor of Music there in 1924.
